The Science Behind a Growth Mindset

Why is it that most of us tend to stay in what is considered a "fixed mindset"? This could be the belief that you are very intelligent so you don't need to study as hard as everyone else. Maybe it's that you are a phenomenal athlete already so you think you don't have to train as hard as other fellow athletes. Maybe it's that you're highly valued at work and that you don't need to put in the extra effort to stand out, keep your job or even get a promotion....

While it's always good to believe you have the capability to be the best or that you actually are, you also must BEHAVE like you are. This means you have to be constantly growing yourself. The most successful people in the world know that if they don’t continue to grow, even when they’re perceived as the best, there is always someone else working harder than them somewhere in this world that will eventually outgrow, out success or outpace them.

This is why most successful people compete with THEMSELVES, each and every day. Each day is a challenge to be better than they were the day before. They work to be more productive, make a bigger impact, sharpen their skill even sharper than the day before.

As a personal coach, I see the fixed mindset all the time. People hear tactics that other successful people use like affirming to yourself that you are confident, wealthy, intelligent etc…However, they affirm these things to themselves without being mindful to how they are BEHAVING. As these people’s Success Coach, Business Coach or Life Coach, they come to me asking why it’s not working and I ask the same question back each time, “are you behaving in congruence to make these affirmations true?”, or whatever the tactic may be.

You see, our minds are highly intelligent. You can’t just believe your way to success, although belief is a huge part of it. You have to also act in congruence to the belief you want to become true for your mind to actually conceptualize it.

One suggestion I always give me clients is to start affirming that they “BEHAVE” like someone who is financially free, confident, successful, loving, in perfect health or whatever the trait is that they’d like to possess. That key word BEHAVE is a massive piece that is usually missing.

The other biggest piece is there is NO REAL GROWTH. Yeah you can practice something over and over until you’re blue in the face but if you’re never learning new tactics, you don’t have some sort of Personal Coach, Personal Trainer or Mentor giving you pointers, new strategies, tools and tactics, you’re just going to continue to do the same thing over and over.

He references different studies showing the affect each mindset has on the two different groups. I personally find the results astonishing. Especially since this isn’t just an opinion. This is SOLID FACTUAL EVIDENCE of how our minds work and affect our lives.
